Garland L. Best, 81, of Louisville, passed away at his home surrounded by his loving family on the morning of November 2, 2012.

He was retired from the Courier-Journal as a Lino typist, and was originally from Washington County, KY. He was a graduate of the KY School for the Deaf (KSD) and was extremely active in the deaf community. He belonged to the Louisville Association of the Deaf; Louisville Deaf Senior Citizens; KSD Charitable Foundation; the KY Association of the Deaf; National Association of the Deaf; the Advisory Board for KSD; the KY Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing; and the KY School for the Deaf Hall of Fame for leadership in the deaf community. Garland's sense of humor will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He was known to love to travel, especially the back roads, and was an avid U of K fan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Irene Bugg Best; sister, Peggy Catlett and brothers, Walton, Don and James Best.

Cherishing his memory is his loving wife of 60 years, Frances Best; daughters, Janet (Kenny) Arnold and Karen (James) Axe; grandchildren, Jesse Arnold, Elizabeth (Nathan) Steinert, Charles Arnold and Stephanie Axe; sisters, Luda Sowell, Agnes White, Pauline Jensen and Norma Bradshaw.

Garland's Celebration of Life service will be held on Wednesday, November 7, 2012, at 4 p.m. at the Arch L. Heady at Resthaven Chapel, 4400 Bardstown Road. A visitation for family and friends will be on Wednesday at the funeral home from 1-4 p.m.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the KSD Jacobs Hall Museum, 303 S. 2nd Street, Danville, KY 40422
