Colbert Leo Flanery, age 94, of San Antonio, Texas passed away on Thursday, May 19, 2022. Colbert was born December 24, 1927.
COL Flanery was the youngest of ten children, five boys and 5 girls. He was born 24 December 1927 in Bluestone, Rowan County near Morehead, Kentucky to Jacie C. and Bessie D. Flanery. His parents are deceased as are brothers Roy L., Claud P., Russell E., J. Lloyd and sisters Hazel M. Caudill, Thelma Jackson, Julia R. Troxler and Leona M. Miller. He is survived by his wife of 73 years, children, sister, grandchildren, great grandchildren, other relatives and many friends.
COL Flanery entered the United States Army near the end of World War II as a Private and retired with 38 years active-duty service in December 1983. He received the Legion of Merit, 2 Bronze Star Medals, 2 Meritorious Service Medals, 3 Army Commendation Medals, Order of Military Medical Merit, Master Parachutist Badge, Glider Qualification Badge and eighteen other awards and decorations. While on active-duty COL Flanery attended several military schools including Command and General Staff College and the Army Logistics Management School. After retirement he attended San Antonio College and graduated from Texas State University, San Marcos TX with honors of Summa Cum Laude. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans Chap. 13, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8541 and American Legion Post 592. COL Flanery enjoyed playing Moon-dominoes at the American Legion Post and socializing with his many friends.
