Resided in Randolph County, North Carolina where he was by occupation a farm laborer prior to enlisting in Company B, 52nd North Carolina Infantry in Wake County at the age of 20 on October 10, 1862, for the war. Wounded and captured at Goldsboro on December 17, 1862. Paroled the same day. Listed as a deserter on January 12, 1863. Apprehended on June 21, 1863 and returned to duty. Reported present on surviving company muster rolls through April 1864. Captured at Wilderness, Virginia on May 6, 1864. Confined at Point Lookout yankee prison, Maryland on May 17, 1864. Transferred to Elmira yankee prison, New York on July 23, 1864. Released from Elmira on May 29, 1865.
