Joe Kenneth Holt, Sr., age 73 of Vendor, AR, passed away Sunday, January 27, 2008 at his home in Vendor, AR.
The son of Otis and Rachel Florence (Smith) Holt, was born May 24, 1934 in Vendor, AR.

He had served in the U.S. Army, was a truck driver for Flexsteel, and was a heavy equipment operator. He loved riding his four wheeler and his new tractor, and also loved to hunt. He had been a lifelong resident of Newton County.

His parents preceded him in death, along with a brother, Wayne Holt, and a sister, Evon Flud.

Survivors are his wife of 36 years, Linda (Ricketts) Holt, of the home; his children, Joe Holt, Jr., of Vendor and Tana Rachel Butler and her husband, Seth, of Harrison; a sister, Oleta Haddock, of Vendor; one granddaughter, Miranda Holt; and many other relatives and friends.

Service 2 P.M. Wednesday, January 30, 2008 at Coffman Funeral Home Chapel in Jasper. Burial will follow in Smith Cemetery, at Vendor. Pallbearers are Robby Dotson, Nicky Holt, Randy Holt, Jimmy Holt, Steven Holt, and Glen Smith. Honorary pallbearer are Joe's construction co-workers.

I'll never forget when my father and I walked down in the woods (we lived above where Joe did) and discussed if Joe was alright or not, as we heard the ambulances coming down the creek. I held out hope, but alas, it wasn't to be. My dad talked to Joe not long before and when my dad asked him 'What are you doing, Joe?' He replied 'Trying to die, I guess' and laughed. He was a great man and the community took a loss when we lost him.

Joe was, quite possibly, one of the best shots in the country. He was known for unbelievable shots, but never bragged nor talked up his skill. Once, when a friend invited the Holt clan hunting on his massive farm near Western Grove, Joe and his bunch showed up early. As they were visiting in the front yard with the owner, the sun began to rise and Joe spotted a buck several hundred yards away in a highline right-of-way. 'Boys, I think I'll just end my hunt here.' he said as the pulled out his rifle. They all laughed at ole Joe, with his iron sights til he fired and the buck dropped without so much as a kick. The laughter stopped and amazement took it's place!

Rest in peace, Joe. You have great company up there.
