Ralph was a Presbyterian minister -- a very good one, highly respected. He attended Goshen College in Goshen, Indiana, then McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago. He began his ministry in Indiana, but became the pastor at the Presbyterian Church in O'Neill, Nebraska, then in Lexington, Nebraska, and finally at Presbyterian Church of the Cross in Omaha, Nebraska -- his longest pastorate. His printed obituary states that he founded Presbyterian Church of the Cross. That is inaccurate, but he's the one who made it thrive. There was a founding pastor who preceded Ralph, but it was a troubled pastorate. Ralph was called to that church and over 26 years made it a large, important congregation. Ralph was a trusted, valued, beloved pastor.

His wife, Elinor, was an excellent church musician. She developed a significant ministry of music in that congregation, a feature of that church that remains (as of 2021) a very important signature of Presbytery Church of the Cross.

Though Ralph and Elinor had a get-away home in the Ozarks, which they intended as their retirement home, upon their retirement they settled in Sun City, Arizona.
