He grew up near Latrobe on the Zajdel Apple Orchard, which was owned by his family. He was a graduate of Derry High School. He was born May 9, 1931, in Latrobe, youngest son of the late Stanislaw and Julia Visconti Zajdel. Joe was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church and a life member of VFW Post 33, Greensburg. A Korean War veteran, he served in the Army as a medic and achieved the rank of Corporal. He was awarded a Purple Heart with one Bronze Leaf Cluster, and a number of other medals that he treasured for his service to his country.
In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his two brothers, John and Albert Zajdel; and by a sister-in-law, Caroline Bonifazi Zajdel. Among survivors are a sister-in-law, Henrietta Crusan Zajdel; three nephews, John, Albert and Robert Zajdel; two nieces, Carol Chamberlain and Cathy Zajdel; and two special great-nephews, John H. and namesake, Joseph Zajdel. Special friends are Darcy McDowell and her father, Ken, who helped to look after him at the Heinz Care Facility.
Family and friends may visit from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the JOHN J. LOPATICH FUNERAL HOME INC., 601 Weldon St., Latrobe. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday in St. John the Evangelist Church with the Rev. Anthony Carbone as celebrant. Immediately following Mass, military services will be accorded by the Greensburg VFW Post 33. Interment is private.
