Jewel Virginia Simms, age 78, passed away peacefully on October 30, 2022 at Shady Grove Medical Center in Rockville, Maryland.

Jewel was born August 4, 1944 in Hot Springs, Virginia to Rainie Irene Carpenter (Gillespie) and step-father Gene Carpenter. In her early adult years, Jewel married her first love, Bobby Allen Lee of Rocky Mount, NC and they had two children together. That marriage ended and Jewel went on to marry three times, having two more children.

From humble beginnings, the oldest of eight, Jewel tried her best to be a good mother, wife, daughter, sister and friend. She enjoyed working at Citizen's Bank in Maryland for many years before she retired. She loved to dance to '50s "beach music", and sing in the Riverdale Baptist Church (Maryland) Choir.

Jewel is preceded in death by her mother, Rainie; her step-father, Gene; her brother, Larry Simms; and her eldest child, her son, Robert Lee. She is survived by her daughter, Ginnette "Ginny" Meerman (Lee); her daughter, Mary Breese (Ward); her son, Vincent Mills; her daughter-in-law, Sonia Lee (Fernbaugh); her brothers, Eugene Carpenter and Robert Carpenter; her sisters, Mary Simms, Betty Simms, Amelia "Mel" Beaver (Carpenter) and Laura Barrett (Carpenter); her ten grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, numerous nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces, as well as cousins and extended family members.

All are welcome to join Jewel's family at her viewing on Friday, November 11, 2022, from 10:15 a.m. until time of service at 11:30 a.m. at Buhrig Funeral Home & Crematory, 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; and her virtual gathering of family and friends and service via video chat or telephone beginning at 11:15 a.m.; with Celebrant Patti Vogl officiating. Jewel's family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at Buhrig's Gathering Place (next to the funeral home) immediately following the service. Burial will follow the reception in Mechanicsburg Cemetery in Mechanicsburg to fulfill Jewel's wishes of being buried near where her son Robert Lee was laid to rest in November 2005.

Jewel's family has entrusted her care to Buhrig Funeral Home & Crematory in Mechanicsburg, (717) 766-3421. Read Jewel's full obituary, offer condolences and sympathy, share stories and memories, upload photographs and videos, light a candle and sign her official guest book by visiting Buhrig.com.
