The Oklahoma City Zoo euthanized Asian elephant Bamboo on Tuesday because of declining health from age-related issues.

Officials said in a news release that Bamboo died peacefully inside the Oklahoma City Zoo's elephant barn at Sanctuary. Bamboo was surrounded by her caretakers and the zoo's veterinary care team.

Caretakers also brought the entire elephant herd together inside the barn Tuesday morning to give them time to be near Bamboo.

"Bamboo was a wonderful elephant and it was an honor to care for her throughout her senior years," Rachel Emory, the Oklahoma City Zoo's curator of elephants and rhinos, said in the news release. "Though this decision was extremely difficult, we did not want Bamboo to experience any pain or suffering and together, as a team, decided it was time to say goodbye."

Oklahoma City Zoo officials said Bamboo was about 56 years old and was the zoo's oldest Asian elephant. Sourcing the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the news release states that the median life expectancy for female Asian elephants is 47.

Bamboo and another Asian elephant, Chai, joined the Oklahoma City Zoo in 2015 from the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle. Chai died in 2016.

Zoo officials said Bamboo was known as the grandmother of the zoo's elephant herd.
