Reverend George Hutcheson Denny

Son of Richard Denny and Matilda Walker. Married 1) Charlotte Matilda Wright on 11 Jan 1866 in Essex Co., VA; and 2) Elizabeth "Bettie" B. Jefferson on 2 Apr 1885 in Amelia Co., VA.
He had 2 children with Elizabeth "Bettie Jefferson:
Otelia Denny and Robert Denny.

Father of George Hutcheson Denny, President of Washington & Lee (1902-1911) and the University of Alabama (1912-36, 1941-42).

Chaplain, 50th Va. Inf. Regt., CSA

Minister at Mt. Horeb Prebyterian Church near Lexington, VA and later, Minister of the Amelia Presbyterian Church, Amelia Co., VA.

"Rev Denny tended to my great great Uncle, Sampson Deatherage (private, Co K, 50th Va Inf), as he died of wounds received at the Battle of Charleston, WV - 09/13/1862. Rev Denny gave Sampson a proper burial and wrote a letter to the friends and family telling of Sampson's fate. Thank you Reverend Denny
- Dave Deatherage"

Thanks to Jeffry Burden, Scott Hutchison, and Dave Deatherage for providing additional information.

Note, there's a discrepancy regarding the spelling of his middle name, Hutchinson vs Hutcheson. His marriage record states his name as George Hutchinson Denny. His son, George Hutcheson Denny, is presumably named after his father & all of the records I've seen for him spell his name Hutcheson, thus I am using that for this memorial.
