James Leonard Holtzapfel, 85, of Ironton, passed away Saturday, January 14, 2023 at King's Daughters Medical Center, Ashland, KY. He was born July 9, 1937 to the late Leonard Isadore and Nellie May Savary Holtzapfel. James was also preceded in death by his wife Thalia Burke Holtzapfel on May 22, 2015.

In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by two brothers: Paul Holtzapfel and Michael Holtzapfel; a sister: Janet "Patty" Roadcup; two brother-in-laws: Tom Neal and Fred Newman; a sister-in-law: Geraldine "Gerry" Holtzapfel.

James was a 1956 graduate of St. Joseph High School and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. After high school he attended the University of Dayton and graduated from Marshall University with a bachelor's degree in accounting. James was the Administrator of Finance for Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Ashland, KY and retired after 40 years of service. He loved to go on various fishing trips and many other adventures. James loved watching football and especially the Cleveland Browns, the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Ironton fighting Tigers. He was a member of Elks Lodge 177, enjoyed hosting parties with Thalia at their home, and being around family and friends.

Those left to cherish his memory are two daughters: Cynthia (Dean) McAllister of Grove City, OH, and Christi (Tom) Waybright of Ironton, OH; three sons: James Holtzapfel of Fayetteville, NC, Kenneth (Angela) Holtzapfel of Houston, TX, and Nicholas Holtzapfel of Ironton, OH; grandchildren: Rob (Nicole) Williams, Kenny Holtzapfel, Josh (Jessi) Holtzapfel, Sara Hackworth, Scott (Cindy) McAllister, Mary (Michael) Hathaway, Christopher, (Heather) Willard, Hannah Holtzapfel, and Haley (David Byrd) Holtzapfel; three sisters: Rita (Tony) Patterson of Knoxville, TN, Karen Neal of Dayton, OH and Janice "Tiny" Newman of Ashland, KY; a brother: Robert (Gail) Holtzapfel of South Point, OH; a sister-in-law: Connie Holtzapfel of Franklin Furnace, OH; a brother-in-law: Orin Roadcup of Ironton, OH and sixteen great grandchildren.

Funeral mass will be 1:00pm Saturday, January 21, 2023 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 905 South 5th Street, Ironton, OH with Father Ward officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11:00am until 12:30pm the day of the service at the Tracy Brammer-Monroe Funeral Home, 518 South 6th Street, Ironton, Ohio.
