Ruth Bridget (née Pollack) Coughlin, 71, of Little Falls, NJ, a former book editor and author, passed away on December 25, 2014 in Dover, New Jersey.
Born in Passaic, NJ, Ruth was raised in Clifton, NJ, and lived in Detroit, MI, before moving back to Clifton, and later Little Falls, NJ, in 1996. A 1965 graduate of Douglass College (Rutgers University), Ruth was a Book Editor for the Detroit News for many years and also worked as an Editor for various New York City publishers. Before moving into her role at the newspaper, Coughlin worked as an editor at Harper and Delacorte Press.
On Saturday, July 10, 1983, she married William J. Coughlin, a federal administrative law judge and novelist, whose work she edited while working at Delacorte.
Less than eight years later, in June 1991, William Coughlin was diagnosed with terminal liver cancer, and died nine months later. Ruth wrote about her husband's illness and the aftermath of his death in Grieving: A Love Story, published by Random House in 1993 and by Perennial in 1994.
She was survived by her brother, the actor Michael J. Pollard, and her cousin Alicia Nordquist.
Cremation was private under the direction of the Shook Funeral Home, 639 Van Houten Avenue, Clifton, NJ.
