Donna Jean Bogs was born in Iowa City, IA at 1am on June 25, 1930 to Charles and Zaye Hedges.
She was the youngest of eleven children. She attended a country school, Scott School #6, in Scott Twp, Johnson County, IA and also school in town. She had a fun childhood with many friends and family members in the neighborhood of 1907 G St, Iowa City, IA. Her father had built the house on G St. They also lived on a farm in Scott Twp on RR#6 but her father lost it during the depression.
Donna met the love her life while working at the hatchery near Benton and S Clinton St. She married William Ned Bogs in Rock Island, Il on Feb 14, 1948. They made their first of many homes at 308.5 E LaFayette St, Iowa City, IA. Dad told Mom he would take care of her and she didn't have to work outside the home anymore. He did and she was a housewife/mother ever since. To this union were born seven kids: Kathy, William Jr, Robert, Patricia, Donna Marie, David and Wendy. Mom was happiest when she had all her kids together for a get together, be it a birthday or holiday. She loved her grandkids. She enjoyed keeping tabs on them and seeing photos of them on Facebook or Face Page as she was known for calling it. She was proud of the people they grew up to be and the kids they themselves had.
Mom helped supplement the family income by babysitting in the home. She was in touch with a few of those kids years later. She also bred and sold Pomeranian puppies. There has been a Pomeranian or three in the house for over sixty years except for a stretch in the 1970-80's where there was a little white Peek-a-poo, named Shotzie.
Mom was good with her hands. She had a green thumb. She always had plants and flowers in or outside her house. They family had gardens over the years too but that was more of Dad's domain.
Being a child of the depression, she could stretch a dollar and a meal. No one ever left her table hungry. And she was generous. If she knew someone needed something or she wanted them to have something, you can bet she found a way to get it to them. She usually would send whatever food/gift to the receiver via one of her kids
She also would roll many a head of hair for a home perm. You would find women sitting at the kitchen table, talking and drinking coffee with someone having a towel draped around her shoulders as Ma rolled her hair in those skinny plastic curlers. The scent of a Tony perm could be smelled through out the house.
Mom also enjoyed crafts. She loved macrame. She made a hanging table with a glass top that still hangs in the family room. She also made wall art with silk or dry flowers and paper.
Mom had a wonderful sense of humor. She once made a little photo album for her brother, Lloyd, of him and his two grandsons. She wrote funny dialogue on little stickers and put them on the photos. She would laugh harder then the person reading them at the time.
The hardest times of Mom's life is when her eldest daughter, Kathy, died in 1976 of a sudden illness and when her eldest son, William Jr, died of cancer in 1992. We lost Dad in 2004. Mom stayed in the family home on Amber Ln for the rest of her life. It was the first and only house that she and Dad owned.
Donna was survived by five of her seven children: Robert Bogs Sr (Annie) of North Liberty, IA, Patricia Maxfield (Jeff) of Davenport, IA, Donna Marie Bogs of Iowa City, IA, David Bogs (Michele) of North Liberty, IA and Wendy Lonngren (Jon) of Iowa City, IA, and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, a couple great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, cousins and her elder brother, William Hedges of Colona, IL.
She was proceeded in death by her parents, her husband, her daughter, Kathy, her son, William Jr, her grandson, Christopher, her granddaughters, Amy and Heather, son-in-law, Anthony Weller, her brothers: Chester, Everette, Carroll, Harvey Jr, and Lloyd and her sisters: Delores, Cleo, Lafawn, and Helen.
Services are pending at Lensing Funeral Home.
