Orvis L. Bergman, 82, died Tuesday, February 2, 2016 in his home with his family and friends by his side.

Orvis, the son of Theodore and Evelyn Bergman was born May 28, 1933 at their family farm in Oslo MN, delivered by his grandmother, Lena Narveson. He graduated from Alvarado High School in 1951, and went on to serve in the Army. Following his 2 year Military Service he studied at the UND in the Department of Education and graduated in 1962. While attending the UND, he pitched for the Baseball team and met Lavonne Hovet, and they were married at United Lutheran Church on June 30, 1961. They adopted twin daughters, Kristi and Kari, in 1966 and started their family. Orvis began teaching in Oslo MN before going on to teach Science at Valley Junior High in Grand Forks, ND, where he was the coach of the Basketball team. He earned his Master of Science in Education Degree in 1980 at Bemidji State University.

Orvis was an active member of United Lutheran Church, assisting with communion, catering in the fellowship hall, and ushering for services. He made it his mission to know every person in town, and find a way to be of service to them all. He was a member of the Elks Club, a Golf instructor, a card player, billiard shark, bowler, and Dynamic Duo jokester with his buddy Bruce Morstad. He enjoyed tinkering in the garage, had 3 of everything to help his friends and neighbors, and couldn't find anything he couldn't fix. He was coined Father Time for his favorite gifts of broken watches and clocks which he steadily repaired. He loved Red Lake, fishing, skiing, surfing, boating, and keeping his girls mini bikes running, as fast as we could crash them. He truly loved, and was loved by all. He spent the last of his life caring for his wife with Alzheimer's disease, and his mother in law Evelyn Hovet, until his stroke in 2012, when it was his turn to be the patient.

Orvis is survived by his twin daughters, Kristi Lafferty, and Kari Bergman of Grand Forks, ND; four grandchildren, Derek Fay, Ryan Fay, Miranda Balow, and Jessica Lafferty; his Great Grandson, Gage Balow; his sister Betty Gowan; his brother Don Bergman; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial Services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 6, 2016 in United Lutheran Church, 324 Chestnut St., Grand Forks. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service in the church. Military Honors will be presented by Grand Forks VFW Post #1874 and the ND Army National Guard Funeral Honors Team. Memorials are preferred to United Lutheran Church or the charity of the donor's choice.
