Dr. John Render Turner, 87, of LaGrange died Tuesday, January 23, 2007 at his home.

Dr. Turner was born March 22, 1919 in Meriwether County, GA, son of the late Walter Clarence Turner and Pearl McCrary Turner. He was a member of First United Methodist Church. Dr. Turner was a graduate of Gay High School, University of Georgia, and the Medical College of Georgia, Class of 1944. After finishing Medical College of Georgia, he continued his medical training at Grady Hospital and Egleston Hospital in Atlanta and Peter-Bent-Brigham College in Boston, MA. Dr. Turner served as the Chief of Staff of West Georgia Medical Center, served on the City Council from 1960-1963, served as President of the Board of Trustees for the Medical College of Georgia in 1975, served on the Board of Trustees for West Georgia Medical Center from 1984-1986, and was the Director of the Georgia Angus Foundation. Dr. Turner was retired as a Physician after 53 years of service in private practice. He owned the first EKG machine in LaGrange and read all the EKG's for West Georgia Medical Center in the early years. Dr. Turner served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy where he served in World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a founder of the Troup County Bridle Club. He was a founding member of the LaGrange Symphony Orchestra, served on the Board of Directors, and supported the LaGrange Symphony Orchestra throughout his life.

Dr. Turner was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Dorothy Allen Turner and two daughters, Priscilla Turner and Gretchen Turner. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and outdoorsman.

Survivors include four daughters, Isabelle Knight of LaGrange, Margaret McCrary of Atlanta, GA, Dorothy Noone of Duncan, S.C., and Anne Turner of LaGrange; five sons, Winston Turner of LaGrange, Walter Turner of Charlottesville, VA, John Turner of LaGrange, Jim Turner of Norcross, GA, and Chad Turner of Alpharetta, GA; twenty four grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; brother, R.C. Turner of Gay, GA; and sister, Peggy Neeley of Claxton, GA.

Funeral services were at 11:00 A.M. today at First United Methodist Church with Dr. Walter Murphy and Dr. Harold Lawrence officiating. Burial followed in Shadowlawn Cemetery.

Flowers will be accepted or contributions may be made to the Dorothy Allen Turner Memorial Fund LaGrange Symphony Orchestra or First United Methodist Church.
