Politician. Educated at Melbourne High School and Monash University, Crean worked with several trade unions before entering politics in the Labor preselection for the federal seat of Melbourne Ports. Despite being the son of the previous member, Crean was defeated in the preselection. In the 1990 federal election, Crean won the safe Labor seat of Hotham, and was appointed as the Minister for Science and Technology under the Hawke government. The next year, he became Minister for Primary Industries and Energy. In November 2001, Crean became the Leader of the Labor Party and Leader of the Opposition. In 2003, he and his party condemned Prime Minister John Howard's decision to commit Australian troops into the Iraq War. After unsuccessfully running for Deputy Prime Minister under Rudd, Crean retired from politics in the 2013 election.
