Son of James Madison and Tabitha Moore Thompson Berry.

When the strikes hit the mines in Kentucky and W. Virginia, William moved his wife, Nancy 'Nannie' Gibson Berry, and young son, Eugene M Berry Barry to Columbus, Ohio in 1909. He was for the union and when his family crossed the picket lines, he left and changed the spelling of his last name from Berry to Barry. Upon arriving to Columbus he gave Nannie the choice of going to Detroit with him or going back to Kentucky. She chose Kentucky. So off he went to try his hand in the new fangled business of the automobile industry. He succeeded and even went to Germany, arriving back in the United States on 20 June 1926.
