CANAL WINCHESTER - Nancy Jo Beery passed away on September 30, 2023 after a multi-year battle with a rare disease called Corticobasal Degeneration. Facing every day of this disease with a smile and laughter, Nancy embodied the notion of grace and dignity, even while dying.
Nancy was born to the late Dr. William R. and Martha Owen Beery on October 2, 1949. She graduated from Canal Winchester High School in 1967 and the University of Kentucky in 1971. Nancy taught for 30 years in the Logan Elm School District.
Known to her inner circle as Snee, Nancy was a beloved friend of many. She had a unique ability to connect effortlessly with people of all ages and all walks of life. Her heartfelt interest in you as a person made you feel you were the most special person in her life. She would often remark after meeting you the first time, "I made a new friend today, didn't I?"
As a teacher, she was devoted to her students. She often sent postcards to former students during summer holidays, encouraging them and letting them know she looked forward to seeing them in the fall. She always had time to hear their stories and delighted in their never-ending wonder. In 1987, Nancy's adventurous spirit inspired her to become an exchange teacher and teach for a year in England. She is fondly remembered as a beloved and favorite teacher by generations of students around the world.
Nancy is survived by her brother Dan (Linda Cain) Beery, her brother Bill (Teri) Beery, nephews Matthew (Kari) Beery and Michael Beery, niece Elizabeth (Jason) Sustar, and best friend Janna Twiss. She was an avid Ohio State Buckeye fan and loving friend to many. She brought laughter, joy, and light to the lives of everyone she encountered. Her sense of humor, enthusiasm for life, and bright smile will be greatly missed.
Please join us in celebrating Nancy's life on Friday, October 20 at 11:00 a.m. at Hope United Methodist Church, 83 E. Columbus St., Canal Winchester. Continue our celebration at lunch as we share our best memories of Nancy.
Nancy's favorite book was Charlotte's Web. She read it to her students every year and always encouraged them to love reading.
Nancy requested that memorials be made to Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, a book-gifting program that mails free, high-quality books to children from birth to age five, no matter their family's income.
