Mrs. Margaret "Jean" Homan Atherton age 103, of Wildwood, Georgia passed away on Tuesday, February 6, 2024.


Mrs. Jean was born in Orange, New Jersey to the late Thomas Homan and Margaret Chase Homan on June 13, 1920. In 1941 she graduated from Mills College in New York with a bachelor degree in elementary school education .


On December 18, 1942 she married the love of her life, Herbert Atherton. They resided in the New Jersey and New York area until 1946. From there they lived in South Carolina, North Carolina, Colorado, Mississippi and Kentucky until 1963 when she moved to Wildwood, Georgia. Mrs. Jean was of the Seventh Day Adventist faith and loved teaching and reading.


She was an elementary teacher at Wildwood Health Institute from 1963 until she retired in 2005. No conversation was too small to Mrs. Jean, she was always attentive and made sure to give you her undivided attention.


She will be remembered for her gentle and kind personality. She was an amazing mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother and friend.


The last year of her life she was lovingly cared for by the wonderful staff at Country Haven Retirement Center in Ringgold, GA.


Including her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Atherton; son, James Lawrence Atherton; brother, Thomas Chase Homan; granddaughter, Ashlea Atherton Hodges.


Survivors include her children, Judy (Michael) Mullins, Thomas Atherton, Stephen (Chere) Atherton; seven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, as well as many extended friends and family.


A memorial service will be held at a later date in Wildwood, Georgia.
