Rev/Captain John Steel was a Presbyterian minister who was pastor of Rockfish, Ranoke and Great Conewago, New Castle, New Loudon, Donegal, Mercersburg and Carlisle. Erected the First Presbyterian Church in Carlisle in 1757 and was pastor there until his death.

Was commissioned Captain of the Provincial troops by Governor Penn to remove settlers from Indian lands. Served as Captain under the expedition of Armstrong at Kittanning, battle at Blanket Hill and was Captain and Chaplain in the Revolutionary War.
