James Franklin Bradford was born August 30, 1831 in Monroe County Alabama. Married Charllotte Vaughn who was born September 30, 1826 in Sumter District South Carolina. They were married there on September 30, 1849. She died October 15, 1886 in Madisonville, Madison County, Texas.

The family moved from Alabama to Sumter, South Carolinns in 1842.

He enlisted in the Confederate Army on November 13, 1861, as a private at Charleston, South Carolina, in Captain T.V. Walsh's Company. Claremont Cavalry, HOlcombe Legion. He supplied his own horse, which showed a valueof $250.00, and equipment valued at $40.00 on the Muster-in-Roll, dated November 18,1861. This later became Comany "A", Cavalry Battalion. Muster Roll, MOvember 13 through December 31, 1861, shown absent on detached service.
The Muster Roll for January and February 1862, shows Private james Franklin Bradford on sick furlough fourteen days from January 26, 1862 Physicians Certifcate of continued sickness. Absent enlisted men accounted for in Sumter, South Carolina, February 1862, absent sick.
