Son of Henry and Anna "Ankie" (nee Smith) Cantrell, James Talbot married Sarah Parris circa 1850 in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. She was the daughter of William and Mary (Ezell) Parris. Sarah was born on the banks of Buck Creek and grew up there, attending Buck Creek Baptist Church, the church that Reverend Isaac Cantrell had helped established. Rev. Cantrell was the great grandfather of James.

James and Sarah lived the difficult life of the Southern farmer whose life is dictated by the heat of the summer and the winter months. In later years James and Sarah became the caregivers of Sarah's parents and they finalized this arrangement legally:

I William Parris to James T. Cantrell provided that I am to be cared for and supported by J.T. Cantrell, 225 acres on the Pacolet River bounded by Wm. McMillen, Harvey Wofford, Wm. H. Parris, Walker Walls, where I now live. Also any personal property I now possess. Said J.T. Cantrell is to move into my house with me where I now live and treat me and my wife Polly Parris and Dorcas Ezell as members of the family.
Wit; S. Lancaster, H.F. Evans,
Polly (X) Parris wife of William Parris released her dower, 20 Nov. 1880.
