Mary Catherine Vought of Hampton died of colon cancer on Friday, August 25, 2000, at the Hastings home of her daughter. She was 71 years old.
Mrs. Vought was born September 8, 1928, in St. Paul, the daughter of Nicholas and Loretta (Lynch) Kurtz. She attended school in Lakeville, and she married William Vought there on December 31, 1949. The growing family lived in Lakeville and Burnsville for 20 years before moving to Hampton in 1969.
When she was 3 years old, Mary's father was hit and killed by a truck in downtown Minneapolis. When she was 21 her brother Donald died in the Korean War, and when she was 24 her mother passed away. This left Mary and her sister Arlene as the only surviving members of their family until Mary's death 47 years later, resulting in an especially close bond between the two.
Mary enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, word finds, cross stitching, watching professional rasslin', caring for her dog, and making sure her people were always safe. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents Nick and Loretta; her brother, Sgt Donald Kurtz, and brother-in-law Don Larson. She was survived by her husband William Sr., 8 children, 18 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, and sister Arlene Larson.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 29, 2000 at St. Mathias Catholic Church in Hampton, with interment in Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
