British philanthropist, social reformer, and founder of free schools for poor children, the "ragged schools." She was born in the family of the Minister at Lewin's Mead Unitarian Church. She founded a girls' school, in association with her mother, in 1829. In 1883 she met Indian reformer Ram Mohan Roy who visited Bristol on the invitation of her father. She became interested in India and in the poor. In 1846 she opened a Ragged School for the poorest. Other schools followed, but more importantly she secured the legislation which established Industrial Schools and Reformatories in England. During her visits to India she also influenced the Indian government. She remained single, but adopted a daughter in 1858.
