The son of Jacob L. and Mary M. (Winemiller) Reary, he married Hannah Mary Cashman and fathered Mary Louisa (b. 08/03/60 - married a Miller), Sarepta R. (b. 4/29/62), Franklin B. (b. 06/09/66), Ella Isabel (b. 05/16/69 - married a Minnick), Robert M. (b. 03/11/71), John E. (b. @1873), Margaret Ann (b. 04/28/75 - married Charles E. Howe), and Florence Emma (b. 05/13/78 - married a Deatrick). In 1860, he was a farmer living in Mount Pleasant Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 7" tall with light hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Adams County October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Gettysburg November 14 as a private with Co. F, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), promoted to sergeant, and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863. He also enlisted in New Oxford, Adams County, August 29, 1864, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 3 as a private with Co. C, 202nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 3, 1865.

He died at his son Robert's home in Butler Township, Adams County, at age 81-11-1 from "cirrhosis of the liver."
