Civil War veteran dies in Noroton

James D. Hotchkiss, 91, took part in major battles; only one left at the soldiers home.

James D. Hodgkins, 91, one of the two civil war veterans at the Fitch Home for Soldiers in the Noroton Heights passed away Saturday after a lingering illness.

Hotchkiss saw considerable service in the Civil War. He enlisted in Company H, 8th Connecticut Infantry at Naugatuck on February 24, 1864 and received an honorable discharge on December 12, 1865.

He was born in Naugatuck on February 24, 1845 and spent most most of his life farming. The veteran participated in many of the major engagements of the Civil War. He entered the Fitch Home on November 10, 1933.

He was survived by his son, Amos, Hotchkiss of Naugatuck. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Tuesday in the Buckmiller Funeral Home, 20 Park Pl., Naugatuck. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery, Naugatuck.
