Charles Jefferson Wells was the son of William Green Wells and Mary Butcher. He was a farmer, logger, general store owner and postmaster of Ward City, Kentucky. He died after contracting pneumonia while floating a raft of logs down the Big Sandy River. He married in 1877 to Margaret Jane Arrowood, the daughter of John Jackson Arrowood and Eleanor Riddle. He is known as one of the youngest Confederate soldiers in the War Between the States, serving as a fifer in his father's company. Initially, he was 2nd fifer for Company E of the 5th Kentucky Infantry, but later served in Company K of the 13th Georgia Infantry, CSA.
