Charles Frederic Juilliard was in the wine and fruit brokerage business. His showplace home and grounds on Santa Rosa Avenue became Juilliard Park. His son, Frederic Augustus took over his uncle Augustus D. Juilliard’s company upon his death in 1919. He came East in 1891 after graduating from the University of California and entered the textile manufacturing house of his uncle. He was the primary heir to his fortune. His uncle’s bequest endowed the Juilliard Musical Foundation (the conservatory of music) that bears the family name.
