COLONEL IS DEAD
-------------
COL. ROBERT LA FONTAINE, INSPECTOR GENERAL OF WYOMING NATIONAL GUARD, SUCCUMBS TODAY.
-------------
After Long and Honorable Career as Soldier and Citizen, Prominent Cheyenne Railway Mail Clerk, Passes Away in Presence of Family, at Age of 64.
-------------

Col. Robert LaFontaine passed away this morning at 8 o'clock at his residence at 2015 Warren avenue after an illness which has for some weeks been known to be of a most serious nature.

Colonel LaFontaine was Inspector general of the National Guard of Wyoming and a member of the governor's staff. He has been a railway postal mail clerk for the last twenty-five years, and has run west from this city for many years as chief clerk on the road.

Colonel LaFontaine is one of Cheyenne's old and most respected citizens, and his death, although feared by his friends for some weeks past, will be in severe shock, not only to his grief stricken family, but to a large circle of friends and acquaintances of the deceased in this city and throughout the state. The deceased was a true soldier with the most excellent military bearing, natural military attributes, and a thorough military training and wide experience in several branches of service.

The deceased was born in Quebec, Canada, 64 years ago at the time of his death. He has resided in Cheyenne for the last 15 years, having come to this city from Kearney, Neb., with his family. During his residence in Cheyenne he has been employed continually in the railway mail service in which he has made a most enviable record, holding the rank of Chief clerk on the road.

Shortly after his arrival in Cheyenne Mr. LaFontaine became interested in the state militia, and was chosen as captain of the Cheyenne Cavalry troop of the National Guard. He served in this capacity with such credit that he was soon promoted to the rank of major and honored with the position of aide-de-camp to the governor. Three years ago he was again promoted to the rank of colonel and given the position of inspector general of the National Guard of Wyoming, which he has since filled with distinction.

Colonel LaFontaine was a member of John F. Reynolds post, Grand Army of the Republic. He fought during the Civil war with Company I, Twelfth New York cavalry, and rose to the rank of Lieutenant before the war came to an end.

The deceased is survived by a widow, Mrs. Mary E. LaFontaine, and children. The eldest, Robert LaFontaine, is well known as a member of the last state legislature, a former city councilman, and a member of the contracting firm of R. W. Bradley & Co. The three daughters are Miss Mabel LaFontaine, Mrs. Jean Hirst and Mrs. Marchant. There are two other sons, Louis LaFontaine, of this city, and Bert LaFontaine of California. All the children with exception of Bert, who is now sick in California, have been in attendance at the bedside of their father during his recent sickness.

Colonel LaFontaine had up to a few weeks ago been in excellent health and for a man of his year, he has been very active in business and military affairs. A few weeks ago he was taken sick with a cancer of the stomach, which was the cause of his death today.

Arrangements for the funeral have not yet been made.
