Edward John Gill, Sr., 76, of Chapel Hill, passed away Tuesday, June 25th at his home; his family by his side. Ed was born October 12, 1925 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Mary and Joseph Gill.
He proudly served in World War II with the U.S. Army's 399th Infantry Regiment of the 100th ""Century"" Division, and was awarded the Purple Heart while wounded in action near Lemberg, France.
Following his discharge from the Army, Ed accepted a position with General Electric in Newark, New Jersey, where he completed his initial engineering training at the RCA Institute.
After brief positions as an electrical engineer with television stations in Dayton, OH, and Atlanta, GA, he brought his young family to North Carolina, accepting an engineering position with the University of North Carolina's fledgling television station, WUNC.
While working at WUNC, Ed began studies at UNC, transferring to Duke where he earned his Electrical Engineering degree in 1959. Upon graduation he continued at UNC, working for over 30 years as Supervisor of the University's electronics shop. In addition to his regular responsibilities, Ed took great pride in maintaining the scoreboards, sound systems and clocks at the Dean Smith Center, Kenan Stadium, Carmichael Auditorium, Navy and Fetzer Fields and Boshamer Stadium during athletic events on Carolina's campus.
In keeping with his sense of dedication to his community, Ed was also a member of several local service organizations, including the Meridian Sertoma, the Moose and Elks Clubs, the Men's Club of St. Thomas More Catholic Church, and the Knights of Columbus.
He touched the lives of many during his time on earth and will be dearly missed by his family and friends. His memory will always be cherished for what he stood for: integrity, loyalty, church, family, helping others, and his love of Duke basketball.
He was preceded in death by his son, Joe, of Kansas City, MO.
Surviving are his wife, Doris; two daughters, Sandra Cain of High Point and Teresa Gill Wachholz of Efland; two sons, Eddie and Mark Gill, both of Chapel Hill; brother, Joseph P. Gill, Jr. of Greenville, SC; one sister, Florence Prociak of Plains, PA; and five grandchildren, Ashley, Michael, and Kristin Cain of High Point; and Maddie and Stephen Gill of Kansas City, MO.
Funeral Services will be held Friday, June 28th at 10 a.m. at St. Thomas More Catholic Church at 940 Carmichael Street in Chapel Hill. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday evening at Walker's Funeral Home at 120 W. Franklin Street.
