DEATH CALLS J. D. ANDREWS - Spanish War Veteran Is Dead Following Illness of Year's Duration
John D. (Whiskers) Andrews, 81, Spanish American War veteran and life long resident of this city died at the Adams County Memorial Hospital at 9:30 o'clock Friday night of complications and senility. Mr. Andrews had been ailing for the past year and at various times was a patient at the hospital. Five weeks ago he was removed to the hospital where he was a patient until his death.
The deceased served in the Spanish American War, enlisting in the United States service on April 26, 1898 and being discharged in January, 1899. He saw service in Cuba . He was later a member of the Arthur Miller Camp, No. 52, Spanish American War Veterans.
He was a laborer and lived in and near this city all his life. He served as constable until a few years ago when failing health caused him to retire. He drove the first Standard Oil wagon in the city of Decatur .
Mr. Andrews was born in Washington township, December 8, 1850, a son of Thomas and Deborah Andrews. His wife, Theresa Ball-Andrews, preceded him in death 15 years ago.
Surviving are three children, Mrs. Enoch Eady of this city; Mrs. C. W. Railing of Lima , O., and H. B. Andrews of Akron , Ohio ; 11 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; one brother, William Andrews of Coffeyville , Kansas , and one sister, Mrs. Rose Slagle, Los Angeles , Cal .
Mr. Andrews made his home in the Morrison building on South Second street, and part of the time lived with his daughter at Lima, Ohio. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church of this city.
Funeral services will be held at the Methodist church, Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock with Rev. B. H. Franklin, pastor, officiating. Military services will be conducted by the Spanish American War Veterans and the Adams Post of the American Legion. Burial will be made in the Decatur cemetery.
The body was brought to the Lobenstein and Doan Funeral Parlors where friends may view it until time of the funeral.
