William H. Alvis was born in Virginia about 1822 or 1823 to Henry Harris Alvis and Mo(u)rning Thacker Alvis. Per note from Marcella Headrick he moved to Kentucky in the 1840's with Thomas Pickerel.
The 1850 Census and family trees show him married to Nancy Hagan.
Nancy Hagan Alvis died July 19th, 1887
William Alvis then married Sarah M Turner on October 24th, 1887.
While no date of death for William has been found his widow Sarah filed for a widows pension on October 24, 1898 - Application #685,087 and awarded pension by Certificate 482,400.
Sarah died November 3, 1903.

Military Service: Company K, Fifth Regiment Kentucky Cavalry Union
War Department Records show Pvt. William Alvis first enlisted October 3, 1861 - age 34. He mustered-in the Union Army March 31st, 1862 at Gallatin, Tennessee. His horse was valued at $100.00
The Muster Rolls show him present from Muster-in till April 28, 1863 when he 'Deserted' He returned to the Regiment on April 1st, 1864. The records show that he was returned to service by Col. W.W. Lowe of the 5th Iowa Cavalry, Commanding 3rd Cavalry Division of the Army of the Cumberland.

He is shown as 'Present' with the Regiment until Muster out May 3rd, 1865 in Louisville, Kentucky.

From the time of his return to Muster-out, he would have served with General Judson Kilpatrick's Cavalry in General Sherman's Army in the battles up to Atlanta, the ride around Atlanta including the battle at Lovejoy Station. The March to Savannah and the subsequent Carolina's Campaign. He was wounded at Monroe's Cross Roads in North Carolina on March 10, 1865. No details on the nature of the wound were found.
