Enlisted in Company G, 3rd Kentucky Mounted Infantry (Forrest's Cavalry) at Camp Boone and mustered in as Private on July 11, 1861. He traveled 100 miles to his rendezvous. He was present or accounted for until he deserted in Vernon, Mississippi on June 14, 1863. He returned to duty in September – October 1863. He was Breveted 2nd Lieutenant prior to March – April 1864. He was wounded in the shoulder at the battle of Tishomingo Creek, Mississippi on June 10, 1864. He was captured near Franklin, Tennessee on December 17, 1864 and imprisoned at Fort Delaware yankee prison, Delaware until released on June 17, 1865.
