Maria survived WW II in a Nazi forced-labor camp. After the war, she went to Australia as a displaced person. Making the trip across the oceans with her were her mother, her husband, and her two young sons.
The family settled in the Australian state of Victoria, and Maria settled into life as an Australian.
At about the same time that Maria went to Australia as a displaced person, Maria's sister Olga went to the United States of America as a displaced person. Maria's sister also had spent WW II in a Nazi forced-labor camp.
Maria's sister believed that Maria had not survived World War II. And Maria believed that her sister had not survived WW II.
In 2008, the two branches of the family made connection, each surprised that the other side had survived.
