Walter Shaw, 1946, age 26. Though you can't tell from the crop, he's in uniform. The USS Yancey was the last ship to transit the Panama Canal in 1945. She stopped at New Orleans, La, and Jacksonville, Fla, before arriving at Norfolk, Va, on 29 January 1946 and the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard on 28 February. His wife Peggy, who was a native of Florida but had waited for him throughout the war in Philadelphia, met the ship in Jacksonville. This photo was taken at the Hotel George Washington Rainbow Room in Jacksonville while Walter was enjoying an evening out with Peggy and her brother Gid Godwin. The full photograph is posted on Peggy's memorial.

Around 1946, Walter typed up this list of the engagements he had participated in during 1944 and 1945. I have not been able to confirm all the ships he was on, but I believe he was on the USS New Jersey by 1943. He transferred to the USS Yancey in 1945, either just before or after the formal surrender of Japan on 2 September 1945. The Yancey was the first ship to unload in Tokyo harbor. The list is dated from a note in Peggy's handwriting on the back: instructions for getting to somewhere in California by bus. He was probably not pleased with her at the time, but I am now. He took a Royal upright typewriter with him when he went to sea and bolted it to a desk in his quarters. When I was about 8, he caught me playing with this typewriter. His response was the same as when he'd caught my sister playing with it a few years earlier; he taught us each to touch type. There was no cheating, because he'd capped all the keys. The Royal upright is now bolted in the typing well of my desk. Except for the top row, removed by one of Peggy's secretaries in the 1960s, the keys are still capped. ~~ his daughter Dee

Judging from the partial stories verso, this incident on the USS Yancey occurred in early October 1945. Walter once told me that the seas were very choppy that day and the ship-to-ship transfer almost didn't happen. The patient was in distress and time was a factor. He was concerned that even if they did make the rendezvous, they wouldn't be able to transfer either the patient or a physician ship to ship, and he'd end up performing the emergency surgery with a doctor on the other end of the radio talking him through it. Walter is the second sailor from the left in this photo taken in 1940 or 1941. Apparently the group of friends called themselves "The Jerks," and the title must have been written by one of them, because it's not in Walter's handwriting.

Walter's USS Yancey liberty card is laminated and has no date of issue. Going just by the style and the lamination, I believe this card dates from about 1950. He served several tours on the Yancey. His three-year shore leave started about April 1951.

Right, Walter balances his three-month-old daughter Deborah, who has just learned to sit up, on his hand. At the time he was in the middle of a three-year shore tour.
