Walter was active in the formation of the Disciples of Christ Church with Alexander Campbell (founded Bethany College, Bethany, WV) as an evangelist and minister. He preached at the First Christian Church in Allegheny City for a short time. Then he and Sarah moved frequently as he evangelized and preached throughout the Ohio Valley. They lived in Pittsburgh from 1845 until 1849 when Sarah died. Walter then returned to Mayslick, Mason Co., KY where he remarried and remained for the rest of his life.
