Blaine was born Nov 3, 1917 in Thayne in a white two room house that stood where his home now stands in 291 Dana Street. He was the fifth child of Henry and Olive Heap.
He grew up in Thayne with his four brothers, Darwin, Eldred (Bill), LaMont, LeRoy and three sisters, Beernice, Ruth and Elaine.
He attended grade school in Thayne and high school in Afton.
He married Fern Barker of Afton on Aug 3, 1937 in Paris ID. They had two sons; DeLoyd and Delano
Growing up on a ranch, Blaine was an excellent horseman. He loved roping and racing. He was a charter member of the All American Cutter Racing Association and enjoyed many years running the winter cutter races.
Blaine worked for Willard Nelson for many years delivering gas, had a milk route and worked for the power and light.
In 1961 after the boys had grown up and left home, Blaine had an opportunity to go to Florida to train thoroughbred colts. His success in Florida led him to a stable in Chicago where he was offered the training job for Scottsdale Farms, a professional racing stable in Illinois. More than once he was the leading trainer at the tracks where he was running. He had many stake winners. He ran at many of the well-known tracks in Kentucky, Illinois, Florida and the New England area.
In 1966 Frank E. Kilrose of Blood Horse Magazine. picked "Better Sea, trained by Blane Heap" as among the outstanding thoroughbreds of the year. And in 1967, the same honor was bestowed on Lil Bit Tight also trained by Blaine.
After he retired from racing back east, he came home to Star Valley, but couldn't get racing out of his system, so bought his own race horses and headed for Arizona. For many more years he would run in Arizona in the winter and came home to Star Valley in the summer. He started cow cutting and become very good at it. In 1984 he competed in the Idaho State Fair in Blackfoot at the age of 66 where he won a silver buckle riding his horse Lady. He continued to ride in parades and compete at the fair until the age of 77
After Lady died he bought a young filly named Skip's Dream Bright. He broke her to ride and she became his pride and joy for his last years. He enjoyed riding her and continued to ride almost every day until November of last year.
