Catherine Monahan Ryan was born in 1836 in Meath County, Ireland. Her granddaughter, Agnes Ryan Beaver, thought she was from Dublin. Her granddaughter Katherine Ryan noted that her grandmother had been an only child. Catherine and Edward came to America via Canada; spending about three years there and gave birth to her first two sons, Thomas and James. They removed to New York where Catherine had her son Lawrence and daughter Katie. They were in Illinois when the last child, Bertie, was born.
Agnes remembered that her grandmother spent seven years of her youth in a monastary in Ireland. She married in Ireland. Agnes said that Edward wasn't her grandfather's real first name. Catherine didn't like it so called him Edward. Her granddaughter thought it might have been Thomas.
