Chas. E. Eaton was born at Scottsville, N.Y., March 28, 1836. In 1846 he came to Michigan with his parents, who settled in Bunkerhill township. At the age of 21 he went to California for his health, making the trip via the Isthmus of Panama. He rermained in California until the breaking out of the civil war, when as leader of the Los Angeles Band, he started overland for Texas. On the way orders were received that members of the band were required to enlist the same as soldiers. Part of the members refused to enlist and the band returned to Los Angeles. There upon, Mr. Eaton enlisted in a California regiment for three years. At the close of the war, he went to Tucson, Arizona, where for several years he acted in the capacity of deputy revenue collector. In 1871 Mr. Eaton came to Mason, which has since been his home. He was married to Miss Amelia Christmas of this city at the home of his sister, Mrs. Frances Ford, in Leslie, Jan 16, 1873. Two children were born to them, both dying in infancy. Mrs. Eaton's demise occured about 11 years ago. For the past few years he has engaged in the wool buying business in the firm of Eaton & Archer. Mr. Eaton has been an invalid for some time, but was seriously ill only about three weeks before his death.
