Betty was a daughter of the Army and an Army wife. She was born October 29 1916, the daughter of General James Alward Van Fleet and Helen Hazel Moore Van Fleet. In 1941 she married Edward Traywick McConnell, West Point class of 1939, and led a challenging and interesting life as an Army wife throughout his career.
Betty had a lifelong connection to Polk County. At the age of six she caught her first fish in Lake Arietta, and as a young teenager drove her friends to choir practice at First Presbyterian Church of Auburndale on PK Avenue.
Betty is survived by her sister Dempsie Van Fleet McChristian, her daughters Catherine McConnell Holt, Mary Jane McConnell, and Lt. Col. Avery McConnell Leider, their husbands, seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 9:00 AM on Wednesday April 1 at Alamance Presbyterian Church in Greensboro, with interment to follow at the National Cemetery in Salisbury NC at 11:00 AM.
