George Adams enlisted as a Private on 10 July 1861 at the age of 18. He was mustered in Company D, 1st North Carolina Cavalry on 10 Jul 1861. He was promoted to full Corporal on 30 Jun 1863 and then promoted to full Sergeant (Estimated day of Promo) on 30 Nov 1864. He died as a prisoner of war on 22 Apr 1865 in Washington, DC.
