OBITUARY - Plain Dealer, Wabash (IN)
Charles Baer, 88, former prominent business man of Wabash, died Monday evening in his home in Long Beach, Calif. where he had been residing for the past several years.

Mr. Baer, long associated with the lumber business and banking circles in Wabash, was born in Stark county, Ohio, in 1857 to William C. and Christina (Stoffer) Baer. The parents were pioneers of the county. They came to Indiana in 1865 and settled near Liberty Mills. Mr. Baer attended the Liberty Mills school and after graduating he taught a few years in the Chester township school.

He came to Wabash in 1878 and was associated with the Bruner and Son Lumber company and woodworking company. After a few years he assisted the Aukerman and Kendall company to build a new mill on West Canal street. In about 1896 he went into the wholesale lumber business for himself and at the age of 70 established the Baer Lumber company which is still in operation, although he sold it when he left Wabash.

Mr. Baer was one of the founders of the Home Loan and Savings company and was the first president of the company. He was also the chairman of the board of directors of the First National Bank in Wabash from the date of its organization in 1933 until late summer of 1938 when he moved to California. He was a member of the school board of Wabash city schools for nine years.

His first marriage was to Miss Ella Truxwell in Wabash. She was one of the first graduates of Wabash High School. She preceded him in death several years ago. Their two daughters, Bess and Lou Baer, reside in Long Beach and other survivors are his present wife, the former Miss Carrie McCarty of Wabash, and his only brother, Sam Baer, Washington, DC, and Wabash.

The message from the family did not state funeral arrangements but said that details would be sent later.
