Paul Peter Cwikla, the son of the late Peter and Caroline (Lis) Cwikla, was born on January 1, 1923, at Bettendorf, Iowa. At the age of 2 years, he came with his parents to Thief Lake Township of Marshall County near Middle River, where he attended school and grew to manhood. Paul was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith, and on June 23, 1948, was united in marriage to Frances Jesme at St. Bernard's Catholic Church at Thief River Falls. The couple lived and farmed in the Thief Lake community for many years. Paul was a long-time member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church of Middle River and served on the Thief Lake Town Board for 30 years. He loved the outdoors, especially trapping, hunting and fishing. In 1991, the couple retired and moved into Middle River. Since January of 2008, Paul has resided at the Thief River Care Center in Thief River Falls where he passed away peacefully on Saturday afternoon, May 30, 2009, at the age of 86 years, 4 months, and 29 days.
He is survived by his wife, Frances; two sons: Ken (Sybil), of Middle River and Bob (MariLou), of Williams, Minnesota; two daughters: Doris (Roy) Bernstein, of Williston, North Dakota and Lorri (Jim) Brandenburg, of Pine Haven, Wyoming; 7 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; one brother: Frank (Arlene), Wannaska, Minnesota; two sisters: Mary Taus, of Greenbush and Ann Zeidlik, of Roseau, Minnesota; one sister-in-law: Mimi Cwikla, of Middle River; in addition to many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents, step-father: Nick Zelik, daughter-in-law: Bonnie, four brothers: Stanley, Alex, John and Joseph, and two sisters: Rose Burian and Pauline Berg.
