Kennard Clay Niner, 82, of Portsmouth, died Wednesday, June 3, 2009, at Heartland of Portsmouth.

He was born Sept. 8, 1926, at Wheelersburg, son of the late Leonard and Katherine Niner. He was retired from Portsmouth Metropolitan Housing Authority and was a World War II Navy veteran.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lueda Niner, and his second wife, Mary Niner.

Surviving are two sons, Roger Niner of Columbus and Kenneth Niner of Centerburg; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Clara Shope of Wheelersburg; one brother, Leonard Niner of Minford; and a special friend, Veronica Butler of Portsmouth.

He also was preceded in death by three sisters, Margaret Craft, Gladys Gears and Irma Turner; and two brothers, Willard Niner and Lawrence Niner.

Funeral services will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Melcher Funeral Home in Portsmouth, with the Rev. Kevin Gullion officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Burial Park with military graveside rites by James Dickey Post American Legion. Friends may call at Melcher Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday.
