Sir Sydney Camm, designer of the Hawker Hurricane fighter aircraft. He was born in the Windsor area and is well remembered there, a house where he lived, now being preserved. He showed an early interest in aircraft, and joined a model flying club. He worked at Brooklands during the First World War, joining Hawker Engineering, at Kingston Upon Thames, in 1923. He rose from chief draughtsman to aircraft designer. We will remember him most for the building of the Hurricane, which did so much towards winning The Battle Of Britain. 14,500 Hurricanes were built. He later built the much heavier Typhoon and Tempest fighters and, after the war developed vertical take-off and landing, which led to the Hawker Harrier jump jet.

I respectfully suggest that Sydney was born at Clewer where his father lived near to Sydney's uncle in Bounty Terrace before moving to Alma Road though one source has suggested that the two addresses were synonymous.

November 2015. A short while back I photographed Sydney's house in Thames Ditton as it is scheduled for demolition.
