Husband of Darnell Davis Schmith, whom he married in 1961. He lived in Hernando, FL and formerly Leesburg, VA. A 1958 graduate of McLean High School, he met and married his wife while stationed in Albany, GA. He worked for the former Washington Star newspaper, and later the Washington Post in 1977. He retired after 25 years from the Washington Post as Circulation Zone Manager.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Ellen May Gill Schmith, and a grandson, George Garrett Carrales.
In addition to this wife, he is survived by daughters, Bonita Brewer of Texas, Tammy McWay of Virginia, and Malinda S. Mahaffey and her husband, Lathan Mahaffey of Virginia; grandchildren, Josh Godwin, Evie Lee & Jacob Brewer, Owen & Ashlyn Aronhalt, Lillian Grace & Ella Rose Mahaffey; great-grandchildren, Olivia Carrales, Chloe, Austin, & Christopher Godwin, and Isaiah Nuccio; his father, George Bernard Schmith, Sr. of Florida; sister, Donna L. Lemert of Virginia; brother, William H. Schmith of Florida; two nephews; two nieces, and other relatives.
Interment followed funeral services conducted Tuesday, June 17, 2008.
