RICHARD KAY
It was with great surprise and a shock that the neighborhood was informed of the very sudden death of Richard Kay at his late home in Lincoln township on Monday morning. He had gone out to do the morning work about the barn and in a few minutes was found dead in the farm lot.
He was born in Lancashire, England, on December 22, 1848, and departed this life September 18, 1922, at the age of 73 years, 8 months and 26 days. When a lad of 8 years he came with the family to this country, locating for a time in New York, later moving to Yates City, Ill. Here he grew to young manhood.
On December 14, 1876 he was united in marriage to Miss Josephine Boyer. To them were born three daughters, one of whom died in infancy. The two surviving are Mrs. James McCabe, of Des Moines and Mrs. Edward Hampton, of Russell. Besides these and the aged wife, he leaves to mourn his going, two grandsons.
Some thirty-five years ago the family moved to their present home northeast of Chariton where they have engaged in farming. Mr. Kay had enjoyed good health all of his life and up until the time of his decease he did not seem to be feeling the effects of discomfort.
He was the youngest and last of a family of eight children. As a husband he was devoted and self-sacrificing, as a father he ever had the interest of his children at heart, as a neighbor and acquaintance he was regarded with the warmest esteem and was respected by all who knew him.
The largely attended funeral services were conducted from the late home on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock by Rev. Chas. W. McClelland of the First Presbyterian church of Chariton. Interment took place in Oxford cemetery.
