The Rifles
British Army

He was deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.

Rfn Wild died after an improvised explosive device detonated while on foot patrol near Sangin in Helmand province. He and Capt Mark Hale had been trying to carry LBdr Matthew Hatton, injured in an earlier blast, to safety when they were hit by a second bomb.

Aged 19, Rfn Wild was born in Easington, County Durham. He enlisted in the military in 2007 and was on his first operational tour. Although smaller than most in stature, he was remembered as a fearless soldier who carried his load lightly. He was trained as a team medic and was an exceptional shot, both with rifle and machine gun.

He is survived by his mother Laura Laws, stepfather Alan Simmons, father Darren, sister Megan, brothers Dale and Christopher, girlfriend Kirsty, and other family and friends.

The military funeral took place on September 1, 2009 at St Mary's Church in Horden, County Durham followed by private burial.

In the 19 March 2010 Operational Honours List, Rfn Wild received a posthumous award of Mention in Despatches.
