His full name was James Benjamin Ellis. He was born in Dubois Co, IN, the son of Ellsworth Elliott Ellis and Sophia J. Whittinghill Ellis. He died in Great Lakes, IL of pneumonia while serving in the U.S. Navy, Co. C 3rd Regiment (World War I).

Son of Ellsworth E. and Sophia W. Ellis; born March 9, 1897, Elon, Orange County, Ind. Later moved to Cuzco, Dubois County, Ind. Teacher. Entered U.S. Navy May 31, 1918; sent to Great Lakes Training Station, Chicago, Ill.; assigned to Company C-4, 6th Regiment, Camp Perry, Reserve Hospital Forces. Died of pneumonia September 24, 1918, Great Lakes Naval Training Station. Buried near Union Valley Church, Cuzco, Dubois County, Ind.
