Margaret Stiteler was born October 24, 1851 in Blair County, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of David Harris Stiteler and Hadassah McSarran Stiteler. Her life's journey was the epitome of the westward movement of the 1860's. She was the oldest of eight brothers and sisters. After the civil war in 1866, her family left Pennsylvania, starting at Altoona, Pennsylvania and came down the Ohio River in a flat boat to Cairo, Illinois; then up the Mississippi River to St. Louis. There they traveled the Missouri Railroad to Kansas City. The trip from Kansas City, to the Cato area in northern Crawford County, Kansas was by wagon. The family settled briefly between Cato and Farlington. It is at this location that Margaret died---fighting a prairie fire. Margaret Stiteler died October 13, 1866. She was 15.
