Son of John H.(1816 - abt. 1889) and Elizabeth (née Todd) Beighley (1819 - 1887). Brother of:

Julianna Beighley (1839 - ?)
Benjamin Keller Beighley
James K. Polk Beighley
Charles W. Beighley (1848 - 1886)
Elizabeth Beighley (1851 - ?)
Sylvanus E. Beighley
Mae M. Beighley Patterson
Milton R. Beighley
Anne Amelia Beighley Morton

John spent nearly 35 years in the service of the US, including fighting for our freedom in the Civil War, witnessing the acquisition of Alaska from Russia, and protecting the frontiersmen while stationed at various forts throughout the Midwest and West.

His personal life mirrored that of his colorful military life. He was married at least four times:

(1) Mrs. Caroline (née Donaldson) Birkenstock (sp) (1853 - 1931) on 10 Dec 1874 while stationed at Fort D. A. Russell, Cheyenne, Laramie County, Wyoming. To this union, three children were born: Elizabeth Maria Beighley Howarth(1875 - 1954), James Emmanuel Beighley (1878 - 1948), and John H. Beighley (1879 - abt. 1885). The marriage dissolved by 1883 as Caroline was married by that time to Gustaf A. Wallin (1843 - 1922). On a side note, Elizabeth and James Emmanuel took the surname of Wallin, that of their step-father.

(2) Agnes Scott (1867 - 1931) - married ca. 1887, probably while on his return trip back to Lawrence County, PA from his journeys throughout the Midwest. To this union, two daughters were born: Elizabeth Josephine Beighley Lacon (1888 - 1975) and May Catharine Beighley (1890 - 1945). The marriage dissolved; by 1900, Agnes and their two daughters are no longer living with him (as per 1900 US census record).

(3) Mrs. Jane (nee Quinlin) Nye (1849 - 1919) - married 14 Oct 1896 in Franklin County, Ohio.

(4) Mrs. Agnes B. (nee Walford) Loder Clifton (1857 - 1931) - married 10 Feb 1923 in Jackson County, Michigan.
